Blog 11/4

It's getting tough collecting information AND finding ways to put it into meaningful words. My research project is no different because whenever it seems like I have enough, something comes up to make my previous efforts nearly irrelevant. I suppose that is the life of a researcher, because due to this, it helped me slow down and gather my facts and numbers methodically to the point where the results can answer a question that could potentially change how we deal with retention at the university level.

Survey Thus Far

I've gotten some responses thus far for my survey and as time progresses, hope to receive more. There is a certain trend that I am beginning to see relating to the survey and the same trend is also present in my interviews. Hopefully, the correlation will answer my overall research question

Blog Of The Week

In the process of writing my ARP and other related drafts for class, I realized that I stumbled upon more research that may completely shift my research in the opposite direction. In addition to that, many more factors have now come to my attention regarding college dropout rates that I didn't list.

Blog For The Week

Just finished compiling results from more people I interviewed from my old neighborhood. In addition to the findings from last week, the fear of incurring a debt that they possibly can never recover from is revealing itself to be the #1 reason why people drop out. #2 is the fact that they can't handle being away from home and #3 is the reason that they are immature in the collegiate setting. I expect that the latter 2 reasons will change as I get more research completed.

Research Update

After interviewing 4 people from my old neighborhood that were in college but dropped out, many felt that a strong factor in their decision was the idea that they were not good enough to finish college and were just wasting their time incurring debt.

Long Island, NY

Long Island, New York, an empire state in its own right has many residents and numerous personalities. It’s population ranks #1 in the country and could be the 12^th most populous state if it were actually state. This city just east of Manhattan has the history and prestige that other countries on our planet could only dream of. Michael Jordan called this place home, so has 4 of our United States presidents. Perhaps the most intriguing resident is Amber who has been a resident of Long Island for the majority of her life.

A normal day in Long Island for Amber is just going to school, at any means necessary. During the winter Amber says, “I have to shovel the snow out of the driveway and you have to make sure that you never go to fast or you brake to fast or you’ll go sliding all over the street.”

The school in question, “was a very diverse school”, according to Amber. Numerous personalities and a wholesome, unity based atmosphere made her leaning experience all the more better. So much so that she said, “In high school down here (Fl), the stuff I learned in 9^th and 10^th grade, I had already learned in 8^th.”

Amber also alluded to the fact there are plenty funs to do in Long Island. She mentioned the festival in February tailored to Italians and Puerto Ricans, which also encompasses the true unity and togetherness previously mentioned.
